{Texture? Or No Texture? You tell me...}

Alright, I love playing with textures and couldn't resist playing with some on these images that I took of my daughter this week. I can't decide which I prefer...they both have a completely different look and feel to them before the texture and after they were applied. I've become addicted to making my own textures too - some work well and other's not so easy to work with. I know textures are totally a personal preference so some of you may be looking at the textured ones thinking, 'Oh my, she just ruined that image' - it's way more artsy and I know not everyone is into that much funky change. Anyway, I thought I'd post these to see what you all thought - texture? Or no texture? Thanks for your help!

Both images are amazing with and without the textures! Wow, i can't decide. Beautiful lighting and processing. The warmth and crispness is to die for!

Woah. These are so professional! (which you are). Besides the setting, subject, and mood, the textures additions really do add a 4h dimension to each photo. I love them both.

I love them all with and without, but if I had to choose for these images... I love the first without texture (I focus more on the beautiful sunrays and your little girl) and the last two with texture (the texture completes them). Everything is really tastefully done. Great job!

Love the texture! Adds so much warmth to the photos.

Do you erase back over her face?

Oh Kara, these are just gorgeous. Your textures are done perfectly. They are hard to do properly and you clearly have mastered that.
I also love the look of the non-textured. I'm not much help am i?
Love it all - very impressive work.

I can go either way on these photos. They have such emotion in them, with the texture and without, just different emotion in each. Where did you get that adorable jacket and the black riding boots? Great clothing choice compliments the feel of these pictures.

Wow!! Your photos are fantastic!!
Yes, the Love Affair workshop was amazing!! I really had a great time and I learned a ton from the teachers and the other attendees!!
I highly recommend it! :)

You guys are the best! So it looks like some of the images look better without the texture and some with. Glad to hear your input - thanks for commenting :) Oh and Sandy - I try not to put too much texture over the subjects face otherwise it's distracting, KWIM? And Lindsay the coat is a hand-me-down from my friend Melissa. Her little girl Izzy is older than Briella so she was nice enough to give me some items that she outgrew!
And the black riding boots were a Nordstom find - I just couldn't resist :) Thanks again for all of the wonderful and helpful comments!!

I like them either way, but I agree with what Hayley said. Hey--thanks for stopping by my blog! :)

Ohhh, that is a tough one. I's have to agree with 1 and 2 without but the last one with texture. All of these are gorgeous!

Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog. :o)

Hi Kara May! Thanks for visiting and posting on my blog! I love your photos! I really love what you've done with the textures and keeping the colors so rich and vibrant. I was beginning to think I was the only one these days doing the bright colors. I'm adding you to my permanent blog link list!

I think it all depends on what the pictures are going to be used for. I like them all! How do you do the texture? Is there certain software you use? I am so jealous! You take such GREAT pictures. And your kids are so gorgeous!!

I admit it, I'm a blog stalker of yours, have been for a long time. Love your work, I've never seen anyone photograph and post process the way you do. Anyway, I like the textures - gives it a moody feel. Very inpsiring work.

Thanks for the comments! So funny, yesterday was the first time in a long time that I had time to go blog hopping. I looked at one viewers blog then the blogs they were linked to (or had comments from), and then I went to the blogs they had comments from, and on and on and on. And I can't resist posting comments on peoples blogs that I visit, everyone has such a different view and eye about the world around them- it's fun to see that. Anyway, it was fun and thanks for coming and checking out my blog and leaving such sweet comments. :)

Thank you! These pictures were so randomly taken. We were heading home and went past this beautiful area and I suddenly decided to make a u-turn (the kids were so confused)- I rushed B out since I had her boots in the car, her coat (it was a chilly day) and I happen to have a little knit skirt for her. I whipped them on her not even bothering to take off her sweats - you can see them hanging below her skirt all scrunched up. Any, I couldn't resist plopping her out in the middle of nowhere (for a couple of snaps) to capture this moment, feel, mood. Glad you all like them! Thanks so much for your comments an input!

Too too too perfect! --OMG-- these photos are breath taking! Kara, your work is so beautiful. How do you do what you do??! The setting is amazing, the little coat**adorable. Wow is all I can say. Love the texture and love that non-texture.

Absolutely Stunning! It is amazing how a little texture can drastically change the feel of the picture. I'd have to say that my preference would be: first without and last two with. Someday I may have to have you do your amazing work on my little Washington family!

Kara May said...

Yes, it's amazing how textures can change the look and feel of an image. Thank you all again for your comments and feedback!!

Either way - your images are stunning - but I LOVE the 'feel' that the texture creates:)

I'm new to this world of photo editing but am excited to learn more and I love how you will comment on what you've done to enhance the photo. What version of photoshop do you use? As far as texture goes I think it's more fitting for wider shots with the subject taking up less of the frame. With the photo of a closer shot of your daughter the texture takes away some of the crispness of her liveliness if that makes sense. Did you add the lens flare or was that natural?

personally...i LOVE the textures! these pictures are phenomenal!!! i am in love with the picture of your daughter walking down the dirt road! it's so classic but soo cool at the same time!
